Progesterone receptor agonist
- Endometrial protection when combined with estrogen
- Contraceptive effect via ovulation suppression
- Mood change and breast tenderness are common

- Desogestrel — Third-generation progestin with low androgenicity but higher VTE risk.
- Drospirenone — Antimineralocorticoid progestin used in contraceptives.
- Etonogestrel — Progestin used in contraceptive implants and vaginal rings; irregular bleeding is common, and enzyme inducers can reduce efficacy.
- Etonogestrel implant — Single-rod progestin implant; highly effective long-acting reversible contraception.
- Levonorgestrel — Progestin used in emergency contraception and hormonal IUDs.
- Levonorgestrel IUD — Long-acting intrauterine progestin; contraception plus major reduction in menstrual bleeding.
- Medroxy progesterone — Progestin used orally for endometrial protection and by depot injection for contraception.
- Medroxyprogesterone depot — Long-acting injectable progestin contraception; amenorrhea is common, but bone density falls.
- Megestrol — Progestin used as an appetite stimulant in cachexia.
- Norelgestromin — Active progestin of the norgestimate and transdermal patch systems.
- Norethindrone — A common progestin in contraceptives and hormone therapy.
- Norgestimate — Contraceptive progestin acting through its metabolite norelgestromin.
- Norgestrel — Racemic progestin; only the levonorgestrel enantiomer is active. First OTC oral contraceptive.
- Progesterone — Natural progestogen for endometrial protection and luteal support; often sedating.
