NKCC2 inhibitor
Sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter 2 inhibitor
- Blocks sodium-potassium-chloride reabsorption in the loop — potent diuresis
- Hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, ototoxicity
- Raises urinary calcium
Drugs with this mechanism (4)
- Bumetanide — Potent loop diuretic; more predictable absorption than furosemide.
- Ethacrynic acid — The only non-sulfonamide loop diuretic; also the most ototoxic.
- Furosemide — The prototypical loop diuretic; workhorse for edema and heart failure.
- Torsemide — Loop diuretic with better oral bioavailability than furosemide.
