- Blocks sodium-chloride reabsorption in the distal tubule — the thiazides
- Hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hyperuricemia
- Reduces urinary calcium

- Chlorothiazide — The original thiazide diuretic; the only one available in an intravenous form.
- Chlorthalidone — Long-acting thiazide-like diuretic; preferred for hypertension outcomes.
- Hydrochloro thiazide — The most-prescribed thiazide diuretic for hypertension.
- Indapamide — Thiazide-like diuretic antihypertensive.
- Metolazone — Thiazide-like diuretic that works even in renal impairment; adds to loop diuretics.
