DHP-1 inhibitor
Renal dehydropeptidase-1 (DHP-1) inhibitor
- Inhibits renal dehydropeptidase-1, the brush-border enzyme that otherwise hydrolyzes imipenem in the proximal tubule
- No antibacterial activity of its own — it protects the partner drug and restores its urinary concentrations
- Also limits proximal-tubule accumulation of imipenem and the nephrotoxicity that follows
Drugs with this mechanism (1)
- Cilastatin — Renal dehydropeptidase inhibitor that prevents imipenem breakdown; has no antibacterial activity of its own.
