Renal dehydropeptidase-1 (DHP-1) inhibitor
- Prevents brush-border hydrolysis of imipenem in the proximal tubule
- No antibacterial activity of its own
- Restores the partner drug's urinary concentrations
- Also limits proximal-tubule accumulation of imipenem and the nephrotoxicity that follows
