What it isBeta-lactamase inhibitor with no useful antibacterial activity of its own; given with amoxicillin.
Why this oneIt restores amoxicillin against beta-lactamase producers, which is the whole reason the combination exists.
What limits itDiarrhea is dose-limiting and comes from the clavulanate, not the amoxicillin — so choose the formulation with the lower clavulanate share.

Renal GFR 10-30 mL/min: 500 or 250 mg q12h; GFR <10 mL/min: 500 or 250 mg q24h; hemodialysis: 500 or 250 mg q24h plus a dose during and at end of dialysis. Do not use the 875 mg dose if GFR <30 mL/min.

Pregnancy Pregnancy Category B; no evidence of fetal harm in animal reproduction studies; use only if clearly needed.
Lactation Amoxicillin is excreted in human milk and may sensitize infants; use with caution in nursing mothers.
