AMPHOJEL
What it isAluminum antacid that neutralizes gastric acid and binds phosphate; short-term dyspepsia and refractory hyperphosphatemia.
Why this oneIts phosphate binding once made it useful in renal failure, but safer nonaluminum binders have largely replaced it.
What limits itIt binds quinolones, tetracyclines and levothyroxine; constipation and neurotoxic accumulation make chronic use unsafe in kidney disease.
