Lead sequestrant
- Chelates lead → water-soluble complex excreted in urine
- Treats symptomatic lead poisoning
- Chelation is nonselective — essential metals are removed too
Drugs with this mechanism (2)
- Edetate calcium disodium — IV lead chelator; nephrotoxic and not interchangeable with disodium EDTA, which can cause fatal hypocalcemia.
- Succimer — Oral lead chelator used in children; monitor liver enzymes and neutrophils, and remove the exposure source.
