Methyltransferase methyl donor
Methyl donor to methyltransferases (SAMe)
Methyltransferase methyl donor — mechanism card
- The principal methyl donor: hands its methyl group to methyltransferases
- Supports serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine synthesis — indirectly, not by blocking reuptake
- Its cycle runs on B12 and folate: deficiency of either blunts it and raises homocysteine
Drugs with this mechanism (1)
- S-adenosylmethionine — The body’s principal methyl donor, sold OTC; the best-evidenced supplement antidepressant, mainly as an SSRI adjunct.
