Bacterial DNA damaging agent
- Reduced intracellularly to reactive intermediates that damage bacterial DNA
- Also damages bacterial ribosomal proteins and respiratory enzymes
- Requires bacterial nitroreductase, which gives the selectivity

- Nitrofurantoin — Bladder-concentrated antibiotic for uncomplicated cystitis; useless for pyelonephritis.
