AChE reactivator
Acetylcholinesterase reactivator
AChE reactivator — mechanism card
- Reactivates organophosphate-inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by removing the phosphate from the enzyme’s active site
- Restores acetylcholine breakdown → reverses nicotinic weakness that muscarinic blockade cannot touch
- Must be given before enzyme “aging” makes inhibition permanent
Drugs with this mechanism (1)
- Pralidoxime — Reactivates cholinesterase; given with atropine for organophosphate poisoning.
Self-check
- Which weakness can AChE reactivation reverse that muscarinic blockade cannot?
Nicotinic weakness. - What timing limit constrains AChE reactivation after organophosphate exposure?
Give before enzyme aging makes inhibition permanent.
